Kathy Etchingham ran away from home, not for the first time, when she was sixteen.
Escaping from a miserable and disturbed childhood, she landed in London in the centre of the swinging sixties and among a clique of musicians who were in the process of changing the world.
Friends included Brian Jones, Keith Moon, Pete Townshend, Lennon and McCartney, Eric Burdon, Chas Chandler, Georgie Fame, Eric Clapton and many more.
These people lived together, played together, ate together, drank together, did drugs together and, occasionally, slept together.
In 1966 Chas Chandler brought Jimi Hendrix to London. Jimi and Kathy met on the day he arrived and their relationship as lovers lasted for almost three years, during which time Jimi became acclaimed as one of the greatest and most original guitarists in the world.
But as the trappings of fame and wealth were heaped upon him, darker forces came into play. Drugs clouded his mind, men in suits manipulated his finances and his life with Kathy became cluttered with fantasists, dopeheads and hangers-on. He and Kathy separated. Jimi's death the following year epitomized the end of the sixties' dream.
Kathy left the music scene, married, had two sons and put her former life behind her.
But nearly twenty years after Hendrix's death, the past came back to haunt her. Kathy was dragged into a series of court cases to protect friends and herself. It ended in more tragedy.
In this book Kathy sets the record straight about her life with the rock legend, and offers a new theory of what actually happened the night Hendrix died.
Through Gypsy Eyes eBook Kathy Etchingham Andrew Crofts
Hearing Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced?" in 1967 changed my life. Having been blessed to see him five times and meet him long enough to get an autograph outside the Fillmore East I've subsequently read many books about him. Most seem to have been written by people who were not there for the events they describe. Those books have their place, in varying degrees. But for me, Kathy Etchingham's "Through Gypsy Eyes" joins Leon Hendrix's "A Brother's Story" in standing above the rest as books by people who were there and who knew and loved Jimi when he was alive. Kathy's tale of life with Hendrix just before and after he became a star beautifully complements Leon's story of growing up with Jimi, a story that nobody else has ever come close to matching in conveying how Jimi became Jimi. Each author grounds their book in their own story, which serves to render their connections to Hendrix all the more personal and real.
Jimi Hendrix's humanity rings clearly in both of these books. If, as I do, you love Jimi's music and the spirit, love and humanity it conveys you owe it to yourself to read these two books. The ring of truth speaks for itself, and after reading these books you'll feel closer to Jimi in a way that will even enhance your enjoyment of his amazing music. I say, "Thank you, Kathy Etchingham!"

Through Gypsy Eyes eBook Kathy Etchingham Andrew Crofts Reviews
Kathy Etchingham presents her story simply and clearly, without evasions or undue drama. I lived in London in the 1960s and the picture she creates rings absolutely true. Initially it was a time of innocence, as the influence of drugs and money on rock was only just starting to be felt. She describes the early, primitive gigs, the modest apartment that she lived in with Hendrix, the child-like qualities that they shared, his possessiveness and jealousy, her own independent spirit, the arguments they had, her inability to cook--it's all here with unpretentious honesty.
The story continues a couple of years later with a disastrous visit to New York where she found Hendrix surrounded by a sleazy entourage of hookers and dope dealers and was unable to make sense of the change that occurred. Finally she describes her own methodical, and successful, efforts to obtain testimonials from paramedics who were on the scene when Hendrix had died.
We may not be so interested in her digressions into her own life after she had separated from Hendrix, but the rest of the book is compulsive reading.
Kathy told an entertaining story, but I was expecting something very different. I really thought that they loved each other, but in my opinion they really didn't show it well -- both cheating on each other and Kathy's relief when Jimi went on tour; lots of fighting. I have no doubt that they really cared for one another while they were together and I do feel that Kathy is a good person. They were at their best during the domestic parts of their relationship. I was very surprised at Jimi's mentality about a woman being in the kitchen. I had to laugh; it was the 60's after all. Some of the things that Kathy had to say caused me to think less highly of Jimi; slightly painful I admit.
She and Jimi hardly saw one another during the last year of his life.
"The distressed superstar was not the Jimi I had met and fallen in love with. All the sweetness and gentleness had disappeared. The drugs and the stress had changed him beyond recognition."
If Jimi had been taken care of which obviously he needed to be, those things would not be true. I also believe that if somebody got a hold of him and nursed him back to health -- he would be the same Jimi. I don't know how anybody could think that he would not change with what he went thru with parasites all over him all of the time That would never happen today. Jimi needed someone (a body guard) with him 24/7 and he needed to be in the studio working his magic and Mike Jeffrey made that impossible for him.
It was also interesting that Jimi was seen with "very freaky" women.
It has always been my theory that because of the mother that Jimi had, he was highly vulnerable to the attentions of any woman. You can't really fix those things that happen to a very young child. There was no time that he ever had any security in his entire life. Kathy and Jimi had such similar experiences as neglected children and I think that was the bond that they shared. Both were very injured people.
I also took into account that she was married with two children so that influenced her story telling I am sure.
I thought she was very brave to take on Monica in defense of Jimi in court. I think very highly of her actually.
I just realized as I write this to you that there was such a lack of emotion in her story. It was a good read but not what I had expected.
